Pacifica Quartet & Anthony McGill | Ben Shirley’s High Sierra Sonata

Composer Ben Shirley collaborated with clarinetist Anthony McGill and the Pacifica Quartet to create “High Sierra Sonata,” a 15-minute clarinet quintet that speaks volumes about his remarkable transformation.

Ben’s path to composition was far from conventional. He began by playing electric bass in a variety of venues, from bars to arenas, during his teenage years. However, his life took a tumultuous turn, leading him down a path of substance abuse and homelessness.

Despite the challenges, Ben’s tenacity and passion for music proved to be his guiding light. He turned his life around, overcoming addiction and homelessness, and channeled his energy into the world of classical composition. Now a respected composer, orchestrator, and arranger, Ben serves as the composer-in-residence for Street Symphony, a testament to his unwavering dedication.

“High Sierra Sonata,” inspired by Ben’s experiences in the Eastern Sierras, is a testament to his resilience and artistic triumph. The premiere of this evocative composition took place in 2022, capturing the hearts of audiences with its poignant narrative and emotional depth.

Looking ahead, the musicians are excited to continue sharing this captivating piece with audiences, allowing them to experience the power of Ben’s journey through music. Additionally, “High Sierra Sonata” has been immortalized through a recording for Cedille Records. This recording captures the essence of the live performance, enabling listeners to immerse themselves in the emotions conveyed by Ben’s music.
