The Quartetto di Venezia was founded twenty-five years ago by four musicians with a common musical vision, and throughout its illustrious career these same artists have concentrated on the qualities of sonority, balance, and technique that give this ensemble its distinctively Italian charm and flair.
The Quartetto’s artistic conception derives from two important schools of string quartet interpretation: they studied with Piero Farulli of the legendary Quartetto Italiano at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena – where they were awarded the prestigious Diploma d’Onore – and were equally influenced by the central European school of the renowned Vegh Quartet, through their work with Sandor Vegh and Paul Szabo.
In addition to annual appearances throughout Italy, the Quartetto di Venezia has toured extensively in Europe and the United States, and performed in Canada, Latin America, Japan, and Korea. The ensemble has had the honor of playing for the late Pope John Paul II, the President of the Italian Republic, and most recently in a private concert for the president of the European Union.
The Quartetto di Venezia has been broadcast on Italian State Television and on WQXR in New York, Radio Suisse Romande, South Korea Radio MBC, Bäyerischer Rundfunk, and in Austria on Schweizer Radio. Its extensive discography includes recordings for Dynamic, Koch, Ermitage, Hommage, Aura, Musical Heritage Society, Fonit Cetra, CD Classic, and UNICEF. The Quartetto’s most recent release is a three-CD collection of Luigi Cherubini’s six quartets (DECCA). The Quartetto’s collaborations include Bruno Giuranna, Piero Farulli, Paul Szabo, the Borodin Quartet, the Prazak Quartet, Herbert Kefer of the Artis Quartet, Oscar Ghiglia, Danilo Rossi, Pietro De Maria, Lukas Foss, Dieter Flury (1st flute of the Wiener Philharmonic), and Emanuele Segre.
The Quartetto has received official recognition of its twenty-fifth anniversary season from the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano.
The first violinist plays a Santo Serafino 1740 violin from the “Pro Canale” Foundation in Milan.
