In September 2015, John Zion took ownership of the firm from its founder. The artists on our roster are known for their artistic excellence, fertile imaginations, limitless creativity, and warm personalities. They are emerging stars and established, venerated household names.

John Zion became the Managing Director of Melvin Kaplan, Inc. after taking ownership of the firm in September 2015. He was named one of the “Rising Stars in the Performing Arts” by Musical America, and has been invited to speak at the Manhattan School of Music, University at Buffalo, and APAP’s Young Performers Career Advancement Program. 

Before coming to Melvin Kaplan, Inc., he performed regularly as a violinist with orchestras throughout New England and toured Vietnam with his string quartet. John continues to perform occasionally with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and New York Chamber Soloists. Originally from Chicago, John studied violin performance and history at the Hartt School of Music and Lawrence University.

Melvin Kaplan has been for more than fifty years one of America’s most influential forces in chamber music, both as a renowned performer and as manager, teacher, lecturer, and writer. As a soloist, he has premiered works by Vaughan Williams, Ezra Laderman, Hugh Aitken, Gunther Schuller, Mel Powell, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Jean Francaix.

On the faculty of the Juilliard School for thirty years, Mel was also for many years featured regularly as a lecturer/performer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He founded the New York Chamber Soloists, Festival Winds, and Vermont Mozart Festival.

Kate joined Melvin Kaplan, Inc., in 2006, after returning home to Vermont from San Francisco. A graduate of Deerfield Academy and Brown University, where she studied history and creative writing, Kate spends her free time with her three young children, her husband, their large, exuberant dog, and their three-legged cat.

Kate serves on her local school board, is learning to skateboard, and loves reading, cooking, running, and things that make her laugh. Trained as a pianist, she is enjoying the opportunity to pass on her love of all kinds of music to her kids.

Katie joined Melvin Kaplan, Inc. in 2013. She graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in music education and has been teaching strings since 2001. Katie, her husband, and two pugs recently moved to Vermont and are enjoying getting to know the area.

In her free time she gardens, hikes, kayaks, skis, and plays violin and viola.

Kim joined Melvin Kaplan, Inc. in 2012.  Originally from Milwaukee, she graduated from Boston University with a major in French Language and Literature and a minor in Art History.  After graduation she taught English in Lyon, France for two years. Kim has loved getting to know Burlington and exploring the beauty of Vermont, and spends her free time biking, hiking, cooking, and gardening.

Lori joined Melvin Kaplan, Inc. in 2014. Originally from the Finger Lakes region of New York, Lori graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA with a BS in Business Administration and an MBA in International Business. Lori moved to Vermont to be with her husband.
