The Israel Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1965 by Gary Bertini who served as its Artistic Director and conductor for 10 years. Numerous notables served in this post until Philippe Entremont was appointed Principal Conductor in 1995. In 1998 he was named Conductor Laureate. The Orchestra's current conductor, Gil Shohat, was appointed in September 2005.

Numerous internationally known soloists, including Ashkenazy, Perlman, Bronfman and Rampal have performed with the Orchestra, which has also collaborated with widely acclaimed choirs from around the world.

The ICO's repertoire ranges from Vivaldi to Stravinsky, with a special interest in performing great works by Israeli composers (including its musical director, Gil Shohat). The Orchestra attaches a vital importance to fostering music among the young, and its series "For the Entire Family" has been enthusiastically acclaimed by both young audiences and professional music critics.

The Orchestra tours extensively through Europe, North and South America and the Far East and has participated in prestigious festivals including those of Salzburg, Istanbul, Helsinki, Athens, Pompeii, and Sofia. The Orchestra has recorded for Chandos, Musicmasters, Koch, and Teldec.
